NewPotato: iPhone Accessories For The Win

We’re not big gamblers or diehard couch potatoes- too busy testing out camping gear- but if there’s two things we don’t need they would be another remote and another smoky trip to a casino. New Potato Technologies- we’ll pause briefly for a bit of giggling here, and yes we are serious- seeks to remedy both problems with a pair of interesting accessories for your iPhone (or iPod Touch).

Gaming is certainly fun on your Apple portable device, and there are slots games galore- but they are all missing a certain something. That’s where Jackspot Slots comes in, a slightly cheesy dock that can both charge and sync your device, while also serving an added interface. Simply download their free app, choose from your choice of machines (some of which are locked at the beginning), and pull the handle to test your luck. They claim that it’s a “dazzlingly real gaming experience”, but we were happy that it it was not completely authentic- a bit quieter and easier on the wallet! Also, lest you imagine that you are gaming without real prizes, they’ve tossed a few fun bonuses in the mix, and even offer tournaments against other players. You have to play to unlock other machines, yet another incentive to pull just once more. And we liked that the device doesn’t require separate power. At $40, it’s not a bad price for a dock, and just the thing for the Las Vegas lover in your life.

If sitting back on the couch and watching some television is more your style, then the FLPR will make your life a little easier. We’ve tried out quite a few similar devices- plug the small black dongle into the dock connector of your iPhone or iPod Touch, download the unique app from the App Store, and voila! Your phone is now a universal remote! Unlike some of them, there are more than 40,000 codes built-into this one, and it can handle not just TVs but DVD and Blu-ray players and the whole host of home entertainment gear. It can also learn new ones, and you can even create custom macros to send out multiple signals to multiple devices. In fact, we probably liked it best of the ones we’ve tried so far- the interface is clean, and we had good luck using the FLPR around the house and office. It’s a bit pricey at $60+, but definitely worth a look if you can’t handle letting go of your iPhone!
