A Day at the Beach with Numa Optics and DreamSack
Pretend for a moment with me that you’re lying on a beach with warm sun shining down on you, the smell of sunscreen and coconut oil all around, the sound of the ocean at your feet and the taste of salt in the air. Taking a vacation is good for the soul, even if it’s just in your mind and only for a few moments. When you actually do make it to the beach you’ll want to have a few things with you, like a good pair of sunglasses and a nice big, soft towel. As long as we’re talking about sunglasses and towels we may as well leave the well-worn path of ordinary and mundane. How about unbreakable glasses, and a towel made of luxurious and sustainable bamboo? Absolutely!

The Lo-Pro by Numa Optics are one of the most interesting pair of sunglasses we’ve ever encountered. They are unbreakable. Really unbreakable, not just in theory. We really tried to damage these glasses, to no avail. The frames are made out of Swiss Tough-FlexT™ which is cool enough to be alien technology, as far as we are concerned. These glasses got dropped, bent, twisted, pulled, and stepped on, and always just happily returned to their original shape. The lenses are shatter-resistant and scratch proof, and simply pop in and out of the frame. Useful for lenses not breaking, and also for changing out one color lens for another. All of the lenses block 100% of UVA, UVB and UVC rays, keeping your eyes nice and protected. The Lo-Pro’s that we tried are white, and they are also available in black. If you want or need polarized lenses you’ll have to go with the black frames for now, though a polarized option will be available on the white frames next spring. These are a small frame, if you’ve got a bigger head you might consider a different frame, something like the “Point”, which is the same design in a larger size. All of the Numa Optics frames are extremely lightweight, it’s almost like not wearing anything, except for the part where you’re not being blinded by the sun. Because of the small frame the Lo-Pro was a hit with the fairer members of the TO staff. Depending on the lens/frame combination these will run anywhere from $70-100. Go ahead and get a pair- Numa claims they’re the last sunglasses you’ll need to buy, and we think they might be right.

If we could wrap our whole existence in bamboo we would. We realize that it feels like everyone is on the bamboo bandwagon, and that there seems to be a bamboo version of almost anything you can think of, but really we don’t think it’s a bad thing. Bamboo is one of the most sustainable materials available, as it’s one of the fastest growing grasses in the world. Since it’s not practical for everything around us to be made of bamboo we’ll settle for our beach towel to be bamboo. DreamSack has three different beach towels made from 70% bamboo and 30% organic cotton, and much like we had hoped its a towel that gets softer with every washing. The single size is 36 inches x 68 inches, which is a very comfortable size, even for tall or long-legged people. We haven’t tried the double, but it is a whopping 56 inches x 80 inches, which is really more of a blanket than anything else. We’ve looked at sleeping bags for two with good results, so there’s no reason at all to think we wouldn’t love twice as much silky soft bamboo to lounge on the beach with. We love that all three towel prints are different and coordinating- and the print has received many compliments in it’s near excessive amount of time on the beach. (It’s tough being a beach towel reviewer in Hawaii, but someone has to do it.) All of these towels are available through DreamSack or Amazon for $29 and $37 each.
