On Stage with JBL's Portable Speaker Dock

JBL makes a wide range of docks and audio equipment, well-regarded for their sound. So it came as no surprise when the On Stage IIIp delivered clear, crisp audio, a bit light on bass and depth, but plenty of volume for a unit of its size and heft.

Overall, this is a nice in-between model- more powerful and sturdy than the tiny, tinny speaker-only systems; less sound but far more portable than the heavier, outlet-only docks like those we’ve reviewed before. The IIIp can run off of 6 AA batteries or wall power, and lasts a decent while (around 10-12 hours) on batteries. It can also work with pretty much and iPod or iPhone model, to varying degrees- you might need a not-included universal adapter for the iPhone 3G.

The IIIp is also quite attractive, with a small footprint, and the color/surface won’t smudge or distract from most any décor. Another nice feature is the included small remote, which can handle most functions with ease, though can’t put your iPhone or iPod Touch into music mode- you’ll need to do that manually. We thought that a clock and some additional lighting would have been nice, easy additions, but there are plenty of other docks which offer alarms and bells and whistles.

It won’t synchronize your device with your computer, but it will charge your iPod or iPhone. It doesn’t have a carrying case or a convenient place to put the remote when not in use, but is reasonably priced at $130 or so. It works well inside and outside, on a porch or patio especially, but is loud enough for a reasonably-sized party. JBL’s On Stage IIIp isn’t perfect, but does one thing and does it well.
