Navigon GPS: Light, Neat, and Free Traffic Updates
We’ve covered GPS devices before, and even recently a similar device for pets.

But the Navigon 2200T we’ve been testing offers plenty of features at a very attractive price point. Pretty good text-to-speech, free real-time traffic updates for the life of the device, and excellent predictive typing make for an easy-to-use device. We liked the large touchscreen, and enjoyed the lane assistant, a unique feature that helps drivers figure out which lane they need to be in- pretty helpful in San Francisco where exits and entrances can be on the left, right, or even the middle.
Small enough to fit in a pocket, we weren’t thrilled with the startup time- the device can take some time to sync to the satellites. The screen is pretty bright and the speaker loud but the trade-off is that the battery does run out quickly, and unfortunately the unit doesn’t come with a wall charger. And, like many products today, you’ll need some time to figure out the ins and outs of the device- but you’ll want to check Navigon’s site, as the box doesn’t include more than a quickstart guide.
Overall, we definitely recommend the Navigon 2200T- more expensive devices can do more, but the several years of free updates are a nice contrast to the $80 or so charged by other companies. Great value at around $150, and available online and in stores.
