Holiday Thanks, and Coffees for Christmas
On this, the last day before Christmas, in the last week of 2008, we’d like to offer a TrulyObscure toast to all of our readers, sponsors, and partners. Today though, we turn to our beloved Keurig K-cup brewer, and focus on the stuff that is keeping our family fueled through the holidays- a dozen or so coffees and teas from Timothy’s, Diedrich, and Caribou.
Emeril’s Big Easy Bold and Caribou’s Mahogany take home our award for “Best Dark Roast” brews- the former a strong, rich, direct coffee; the latter, a bit sweeter and mellower, and great for the winter. Also perfect for the season is Timothy’s White Hot Chocolate, which don’t taste quite as good as some other powdered hot chocolates, but are convenient, inexpensive, and still yummy.
And don’t forgot the flavored blends- Timothy’s Hazelnut was our choice, and is our overall favorite for a quick wake-up cup in the morning thanks to its great aroma. They also make our preferred Fair Trade Organic coffee, a Nicarauguan, which was a complicated medium-roast that seemed to work better later in the day, against less sweet foods. Diedrich makes a Sumatra blend that we felt similarly about- distinctive, with a nice aftertaste, that was another “later in the day” coffee. For those times where “late in the day” = “right before bedtime”, we suggest the Diedrich Colombian Decaf, strong and rich enough that you’ll forget that you are drinking decaf.
Finally, don’t forget teas- also from Timothy’s are Chinese Green Tea and English Breakfast tea, both of them straightforward and not particularly impressive, but fresh and strong. All of the K-cups are priced around $10-$15 per box of 25, and are usable only in Keurig brewers. Available online, and in some stores (such as Macy’s).
