Big Taste, Tiny Can
I’m going to admit right up front, I have a love for slightly off-beat single serving beverages. I’ve been known to troll the aisles of my local grocery store at all hours of the night looking for something new to quench my thirst. (Okay, trips to the grocery store are also a large part of my social calender, being in a new city can be tough.) Drinks that are difficult to find, or that I’ve never seen before, almost always take priority over old favorites.
I was in a local bakery when I heard the siren call of the obscure, single-serving beverage. In the case in front of me were tiny, brightly colored cans of essn. I had to have them.

essn comes in four flavors: Blood Orange & Cranberry, Minneola Tangerine, Fuji Apple and Meyer Lemon. I went with Meyer Lemon and Blood Orange & Cranberry. I honestly wasn’t expecting much, as many of the fruit drinks on the market are often watery, and less than stellar. With a satisfying amount of fizz, and a wallop of flavor, essn shattered my expectations. essn is made with 100% fruit juice, and that must be what sets them apart from other beverages of the same ilk. Both flavors had a wonderful balance between sweet and tart.
Like many obscurities, essn is difficult to track down. It is also a bit pricey for the amount of juice you get. At nearly $3 for an 8.4 fluid ounce can, it’s not the best default or go-to drink to replace your $1.50 Snapples or Nantucket Nectars. This works out well, as finding them, even in large metropolitan cities can be difficult. I’ll certainly have no problem indulging in them when I visit my one local bakery that provides them. Definitely worth a try if you can find it!
