Truffle Teas from Mighty Leaf

It’s beverage week here on Truly Obscure, and we’ll start with a look at a great product heading on into Fall and Winter- chocolate teas.

It might not sound good, and it certainly takes some getting used to if you are accustomed to the Asian style of tea. But these sweet, nicely flavored teas from Mighty Leaf come in a few varieties, and each one is fairly distinctive. They are best suited to after-dinner/dessert or instead of your morning mocha. Think “hot chocolate” with a bit of black tea flavor, and you can understand- if it works for coffee, it can work for tea.

Chocolate Chip Truffle, Masala Chocolate Truffle (chocolate chai, essentially), and Chocolate Orange round out a six-part collection that ranges from a little too citrusy (the Orange) to surprisingly rich (the Chocolate Chip). While the chocolate wasn’t quite as good as you might hope, the tea is excellent, and works best with some spice (like in the Mayan Chocolate, the best of the bunch).

All in all, the Mighty Leaf teas are quite good; 4 ounces for $6-$8 is reasonably priced for top-quality tea. It might not replace the mocha anytime soon, but is a great alternative, and is available online.
