Bananas for Gorillapod SLR
OK, we were pretty rave in our review of their smaller version. But, to be fair, we did say it should come in a bigger size and in more colors. Joby listened to us on one front at least!
The older model is almost dainty compared to the newer, stronger version aimed at those of you with fancy Nikon D70s and Canon single lens reflex cameras. This beast can hold up to 2.5 pounds (1.1 kilograms) of your preferred still or motion capture device. And the legs are still firm and “grippy” enough to hold the camera stable while you fiddle with your aperture, ASA, flash, focal distance, and who-knows-what-else.
It’s a bit more weight, but nothing compared to either a lens or any other (non-mini) tripod. And it’s $50, twice as much as the baby version, but nothing worth getting red-eye over. Don’t bother getting the larger version unless you have a DSLR- the smaller one will work just fine for most all other cameras. If you don’t know what a DSLR is, you probably don’t have one. If you don’t know what a tripod is, we’re in real trouble here.
Until it comes in other colors, or someone has hacked it into a War of the Worlds type robot, there’s not that much more to say. It works well and it’s available from Joby.
