Coke Blak: Tabletop Fusion!

Coffee+Cola=Coca-Cola’s new carbonated fusion beverage. Available in cute little 8 ounce glass bottles, with only 45 calories, and it’s the first big new coffee flavored cola since Pepsi Kona (which we haven’t tried, unfortunately, and is long since abandoned).

So how is it? Well, we asked a few of our testers if they were up to the Blak challenge- could they tell it was supposed to be coffee flavored? Could they tell it was different from Coke? Did they think someone had violated the world’s most popular soft drink, much the way many felt during the New Coke debacle twenty years ago?

The good news is: it’s not bad. It didn’t offend anyone, and a few even seemed to like it. Most thought the coffee flavor was overwhelmed by a weird creamy taste, and thought it tasted artificial. Blak also didn’t win many points for the name, but did win over people once they saw the packaging. Worst of all, the drink contains aspartame without any special labelling- now you know why it only has 45 calories and tastes a little off.

In short: marketing hype, mediocre beverage, drinkable but nothing to rave about. Cute Blak bottles are worth collecting, and the relative lack of carbonation makes it easier to stomach in the mornings. It doesn’t feel like a bad idea- and maybe bring back the chocolate soda while you’re at it.

Have you tried it? What did you think? Let us know in the comments!
