NeatReceipts Saves Time on Taxes, Expenses
Single function gadgets are becoming more rare these days- it seems as if every device is trying to add in a camera, a calendar, and a music player.
The NeatReceipts’ scanner doesn’t have any such pretensions. It does one thing, and does it well- but in doing so, limits itself to a relatively small audience.
Basically, if you save a lot of receipts this device and software package will be a godsend. It can scan them all in, save and organize the information relatively painlessly, and can export that data to all sorts of programs (Excel, tax software, QuickBooks, etc). It’s easy to use, accurate, fairly fast, and portable.
Best of all, the IRS accepts scanned receipts, so you can throw away all of those loose slips. Generally, the scanner does a good job at recognizing receipts, though it did have problems with faded/wet receipts and cannot work with handwritten invoices. The software is simple, and usually does a good job of extracting the information on the receipt to the correct place (vendor, total expenditure, sales tax, etc).
Overall, it’s a nice package, though at $200 or so it seems a bit pricey unless you go through a lot of receipts. Finally, a word about support- frequently, we run into companies that don’t offer much in the way of customer service. It’s nice to see a business run differently, requests about product service and information were answered promptly by email, and NeatReceipts seems to have thought of pretty much everything that their niche customer could want.
