Not Your Grandpa's Flavors
If the FlavorSpray diet and the Jones’ Turkey and Gravy soda aren’t for you, then maybe you need something a little more sporty. Something with, say, electrolytes and citrus pectin and alpha tocopherol (don’t worry, it’s just vitamin E). And you probably want it to be edible, not some sissy thing you need to drink.
Which is why JellyBelly, in their infinite test-marketed wisdom, has decided to release SportBeans. Seriously. And they’re good, basically like Gatorade or Powerade in a jelly bean form. They’re plenty sweet, but without being too sour. There’s no tangy aftertaste like with some energy drinks and foods. And SportsBeans last pretty well in a pocket, coming in a small 1 oz bag. Right now, there are only two flavors, lemon/lime and orange, but I can see these taking the place of some sports drinks, especially when you don’t want to have that liquidy feeling in your stomach. Available now online and in stores, for about a buck a bag.
And if it’s flavor you want, why not blend your own? Torani has a wide range of flavors available- make Thai teas taste better with coconut, use the caramel on ice cream or deserts, and blend the pomegranate with some liquor for an exotic martini. We tried some of their seasonal flavors, like Italian Eggnog and Pumpkin Spice, and at $7-$9 a bottle, you can save a ton of money making your own drinks instead of buying at some coffee shop. Using them takes a little practice, different flavors require slightly different quantities of syrup, but Torani has some recipes available for inspiration and to make it a bit easier. They even have Cheesecake syrup, for those times when you wish for Cheesecake Pancakes- and who doesn’t?
