Headset for Pros- Gamers Rejoice!
Detachable, adjustable headband? Check. Pull-out microphone? Check. USB adapter, ensuring trouble-free connection to Macs and PCs, Windows 98/ME/XP/2000? Check.
Some headsets try to make artificial 5.1 sound- the SteelSound 5H ups the volume, offering virtual 7.1 surround. Extra-large earphones handled a range of audio, from quiet breathing to loud explosions. We never experienced any hisses, crackles, pops, or feedback as you can sometimes when using headsets.
The microphone isn’t the best, but is perfect for Roger Wilco or other in-game communication. The pull-out feature seems gimmicky, but turns out to be very useful, especially when trying to avoid tangling any cords or wires. Also, the mic is adjustable, so you can bend it closer or farther depending on your taste.
The cord is extra-long, the headset is fairly comfortable (though just a tad heavy), and the software is easy to use (though not as configurable as some other high-end headsets). Bottom line: if you play a lot of games and don’t want to wake up your neighbors or significant other, you need a headset- and the Steelsound 5H is one of the best, even considering the $139 price tag. Bonus for LAN gamers- it breaks down easily into a very portable 3-piece set.
